Homework

At Peak Crossing State School, we are committed to supporting both the learning and wellbeing of our students. As part of this commitment, we take into account current research and best practice to guide our approach. Research consistently shows that formal homework in primary school has little to no impact on student achievement, and can often create unnecessary stress for children and families.

Instead, we believe that students benefit most from time after school that allows them to rest, play, explore interests, connect with family and friends, and enjoy being children. Our approach to homework focuses on simple, meaningful activities that support learning without overwhelming students or disrupting home life.

We encourage:

· Daily reading (15–30 minutes), either independently, with a family member, or being read to — with the goal of fostering a love of books and rich conversations about texts.

· Practising sounds, spelling patterns or number facts when it aligns with classroom learning, as shared by class teachers.

· Engaging in conversations at home about topics being explored in class, with opportunities to follow children’s curiosity through everyday experiences and discussions.

At Peak Crossing, we want learning to be joyful and purposeful — both at school and at home. By keeping homework simple and supportive, we aim to nurture lifelong learners while also respecting the importance of balance and wellbeing for every child.
